The latest opera production of the Basel Theatre, Charpentier Médée, in which Magdalena performed the title role in January, garnered great reviews. The essence of all reviews is a statement that the excellent performance of all participants was crowned by Magdalena:
Süddeutsche Zeitung: Charpentier´s opera Médée was cursed but Magdalena Kožená triumphantly revoke the curse in Basel... Kožená´s Médée calculates in cold blood but she is at the same time full of anger, despair, vibrant erotics. Kožená always controls the expression of undamped passions, nevertheless this rendition of a ruthless female revenge is the current crown of her stage career. Her Médée does not rage, does not spew anger, she is not edgy, instead she meets her calculus calmly. Every murder makes sense. The dramatic expression and the power of singing escalates constantly. Her actions are understandable, victims do not arouse pity. Kožená is the centerpiece of this theater miracle, however, she has great collaborators.
Basellandschaftliche Zeitung: The grandiose Magdalena Kožená sings with an irritating intensity... In every word, in every gesture a strong emotionality is hidden. Kožená presents a wide spectrum of anger, she is gradually turning into a demon... She is virtuoso in recitatives which is so important in the French baroque opera. Her spoken and sung vocals are full of impressive vivacity.
